Thunder Bay's hamlets Port Arthur
and Fort William became bustling cities and are Atlantic Ocean ports of the head
of the Great Inland Seaway. Ships from every nation unload their goods safely
at Thunder Bay's front door - a far cry indeed from those long ago days of the
early fur trade. The area is rich in natural resources, evident
in the diverse mines of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, iron and platinum as
well as amethyst mines, often open to the public. As a great forest center, industries
include production of newsprint, paneling, fine papers, lumber and plywood. Other
products include boats, camping gear, beer and furniture. Thunder
Bay has become the regional services centre for Northwestern Ontario with most
